Servonauts is a couch co-op casual party game where you team with your friends to run a Servo. But there’s a twist, you’re also building the Servo! Build bowsers, connect pipes and merge flows to pump all of the vehicles to meet your quota! Just don’t make mistakes; the consequences can be explosive…

My work on Servonauts involved:

  • Game Design: Developed gameplay features and conducted play-tests to refine ideas. Collaborated with stakeholders, engineers, and artists to shape the game’s identity.
  • Gameplay Programming: Designed and maintained core mechanics, including reworking the flow system to enable directional flow graphs for enhanced gameplay features.
  • Level Design: Created 16 unique levels, each evolving from simple to advanced gameplay. Built tools to streamline the level design process and developed rapid prototyping methods for agile iteration.
  • Systems Design: Drafted feature specifications and rapid-prototype mechanics to guide strategic, artistic, and engineering decisions through a living confluence of documents.
  • Localization: Implemented multi-language support, optimized character sets for limited memory, ensured smooth font fallback and character set maintenance.
  • Development Tools:
    • Build tools and workflows to accelerate including level design tools for faster iteration and UX tools to adjust input glyphs based on device and platform.
  • Platform Development:
    • Nintendo Switch: LotCheck compliance and software patch reliability

For the past year I’ve been working on this Virtual Reality and WebGL experience to train police officers in how to handle call-outs for Family Domestic and Sexual Violence (FDSV). This has not been an easy project; the subject matter alone is very dark, but the impact is why it’s so important. It’s a privilege to work on a project like this that can make a big difference for victims in their time of need.

This project is made up of a few core components:

  • High-resolution stereoscopic 180° video playback, loading seamlessly from the device. (VR)
  • Efficient streaming of HLS video and audio in low-bandwidth remote/rural environments. (WebGL)
  • A highly detailed, fully explorable 3D house environment.
  • An adaptable interaction framework that allows the same content to be fully interactive with hands or controllers via virtual reality, or a mouse and keyboard via a web browser.
  • Extensive asset compression work to ensure that web builds load promptly, but also that virtual reality can maintain a comfortable level of performance regardless of the scenario.
  • And so much more…
